Who Are We

Since 1893, we have led the effort to promote the voice of the marginalised in the Anglican Communion, fostered resistance against injustice and been at the forefront of the development of theological reflection throughout the world.

Our Mission

We exist to:

  • Help provide theological education and formation for ministry, particularly to those who experience disadvantage in accessing theological education.

  • Engage in practical charity work to ameliorate the work to relieve social and economic disadvantage for young people.

  • Support in a Godly way the personal and living needs of members who have made a Holy Promises surrendering their lives to God in discipleship and prayer.

“The Society of the Sacred Mission has helped educate the disadvantaged, housed the homeless, and promoted social justice around the world for over 125 years”

What We’ve Achieved

  • ‘Keeping My Place’ - a program which works to help house homeless young people. It has an astonishing 96% success rate.

  • Placed a Mission Priest in the remote Australian Region known as the Hay Plains. This iconic NSW location, once the seat of the Bishop, was recently without an Anglican Priest. It is now, with our help, blessed by ministry of an excellence Mission Priest.

  • Assisted with the Ordination journey of Female Priests around Australia.

A Message from our Chairperson

I feel that, while it’s always important that the corporate governance of the Society is done well so that all is in order and appropriate, good governance is there to sustain and support the mission and ministry of SSM.

In this way the Board supports the Chapter which determines the ministry of SSM and carries out the work of the society. There are a maze of regulations and requirements of incorporated organisations. The role of the Board and myself as the independent chair, is to make sure we comply without burdening or unduly constraining the Chapter.

It’s lovely to be able to contribute to the carrying out of the mission of SSM if only from the perspective of a board member.
